These end grain cutting boards (or butcher’s blocks) are handcrafted for us by the local Slovenian woodworker, J. Gros. This beautifully crafted cutting board is composed of various wood types. Since it is completely hand-made, each cutting board has a slightly different unique pattern.

With a working surface of approximately 39x20cm (15.3″ x 7.8″), it is just the right size to fit onto any countertop, either at home or in a professional kitchen, and is especially useful when we have a limited working surface.

It is additionally impregnated with natural mineral oil that can be safely used in contact with food. We recommend regular maintenance with this oil, which you can purchase here. That way, the board can last you for many years.

What’s all the buzz with end grain cutting boards? Most importantly, your knives will appreciate it. In comparison to edge grain boards, end grain cutting boards are gentler to the knife’s edge, meaning the knife will remain sharp for longer. The fibers of the wood face upwards and make up the cutting surface, and they receive the blade better than the long edge of a wooden plank.

Additionally, this gives them a “self-healing” property, as the wood fibers close up after they have been cut by the knife, which makes the board more durable. As a result, sharp knives do not leave lasting cuts in the wood that would quickly become filled with bacteria, eventually rotting from the inside out. This makes end grain cutting boards especially sanitary. Wood is cool, right?
